A major earthquake occurred in Japan on Friday March 11 with a measured magnitude of 9.0. Extensive damage has been reported and a tsunami struck the Sendai area in the north-east of the country. Several nuclear reactors have also been damaged and surrounding communities evacuated. Experts in seismology, earthqaukes, tsunami warning sytems and nuclear reactor safety comment below.

At lunchtime on Tuesday 22 February, a major earthquake occurred in the Canterbury region of New Zealand. The earthquake had a measured magnitude of 6.3 with an epicentre around 10km outside Christchurch. This is the second major earthquake event to occur in the region in recent months.

An 8.8 magnitude earthquake that hit off the coast of Chile last night has caused major local damage and the death toll is rising. A tsunami was generated in the pacific and many countries, including Australia and New Zealand remain on tsunami alert.
