FREE TO SPEAK? A survey of Australian scientists & their interaction with the media

March 2007

The mainstream media is a major avenue through which scientists communicate their research and related issues to the public. Yet many scientists prefer not to or feel unable to use this avenue adequately.

To find out more about scientists’ use of the media, the Australian Science Media Centre (AusSMC) and the Australian Science Communicators (ASC) prepared an anonymous questionnaire.

Almost 450 scientists took part in the survey during March and April 2007. The results will help the AusSMC better deliver its services and will assist ASC members to better work with scientists.
